SIOUX CITY, Iowa — The three workers on Ben Carson’s presidential campaign who were injured in a car crash that killed their colleague last week are determined to honor his memory by returning to the hustings in Iowa.
Ryan Rhodes, the Carson campaign’s Iowa state director, said he urged the three young workers — Drew McCall, Aaron Ohnemus and Ryan Patrick Shellooe — to go home after they were released from the hospital but they refused.
Their van flipped Jan. 19 on an icy road in western Iowa and was rammed by another vehicle, killing 25-year-old volunteer Braden Joplin, a Texas Tech University student.
“They said, ’No, we’re finishing the job because it would be a dishonor to Braden’s memory if we left,’” Mr. Rhodes told the crowd at the Revive714 Christian gathering Saturday in Sioux City, Iowa.
Mr. Joplin’s funeral is scheduled for 1 p.m. Monday at Crestview Baptist Church in Midland, Texas, according to a post on the Nalley-Pickle & Welch Funeral Home website.
Most polls show Mr. Carson, a retired neurosurgeon, trailing fellow Republican presidential contenders Donald Trump, Ted Cruz and Marco Rubio in the Feb. 1 Iowa caucuses.
