PELLA, Iowa — Conservative TV and radio host Glenn Beck threw his support Saturday behind Republican presidential candidate Sen. Ted Cruz, who is in a tight race for the country’s leadoff nominating contest here in nine days.
“We need a new George Washington,” said Mr. Beck. “Today’s Washington will not be found in the garish light of gold, but rather, in the bold service of a man who stands tirelessly for what he deeply believes — that government should be of the people, by the people, and for the people.”
“That is why I am endorsing Senator Ted Cruz as the next President of the United States of America.,” he said.
Mr. Cruz was campaign Saturday with Mr. Beck in Iowa.
The boost from Mr. Beck followed a major endorsement coup by Mr. Cruz’s chief rival, billionaire businessman Donald Trump, who earlier in the week teamed up with conservative firebrand Sarah Palin.
Mr. Cruz had credited an endorsement from Mrs. Palin in 2010 with helping him win his senate seat in Texas.
Mr. Beck’s endorsement was not a surprise. He has previously compared Mr. Trump to Adolf Hitler.
Mr. Cruz called Mr. Beck “a good friend and a fearless and reliable conservative.”
“Glenn has been a relentless fighter for liberty, for limited government, and for restoring the country we all love so much. His powerful voice and passion played a critical role in my Senate victory and I am now proud to have him in our corner in 2016,” said Mr. Cruz.
