The Washington Redskins did not have an outside linebackers coach last season, but that will change in 2016 with the addition of Greg Manusky.
The team announced the decision on Friday to add Manusky, which will allow coach Kirk Olivadotti to focus strictly on the inside linebackers. Along with Olivadotti, defensive coordinator Joe Barry, defensive line coach Robb Akey and defensive quality control coach Chad Grimm all chipped in to work with the outside linebackers.
Manusky served as defensive coordinator of the Indianapolis Colts since 2012, and held the same position with the San Diego Chargers in 2011 and the San Francsico 49ers from 2007 through 2010.
Washington signed Manusky, who played linebacker, as an undrafted free agent out of Colgate in 1988. He went on to play with the Minnesota Vikings from 1991 through 1993 and the Kansas City Chiefs from 1994 through 1999.
In 2001, he coached the Redskins’ linebackers and then joined the Chargers in the same capacity from 2002 to 2006.
When Manusky was the Chargers’ defensive coordinator in 2011, Barry coached the linebackers. Redskins general manager Scot McCloughan was the 49ers’ general manager in 2008 and 2009, when Manusky was there.
The Redskins’ last outside linebackers coach was Brian Baker, who served in 2014. On Jan. 12, assistant offensive line coach Shane Day was hired as the Miami Dolphins’ tight ends coach, which left a vacancy on the Redskins’ staff.
