Jay Beagle underwent surgery on one of his hands on Saturday, with the Washington Capitals expecting their third-line center to resume “full hockey activities” in six weeks.
Beagle injured the hand in the Capitals’ 5-2 victory over the Buffalo Sabres on Wednesday night, leaving the game with 5:27 remaining in the second period. Coach Barry Trotz said immediately after the game that Beagle would require surgery and miss an extended period of time because of the injury.
The team did not specify the nature of Beagle’s injury, nor did it disclose which hand was operated on.
Beagle has six goals and six assists in 36 games, putting him on pace for a career high in both categories, and ranks third in the league among full-time centers with a 58.4 faceoff win percentage.
He signed a three-year, $5.25 million contract to return to the Capitals in June, narrowly avoiding becoming an unrestricted free agent for the first time in his career.
