In his first comments since the nuclear agreement was implemented this weekend, Iran’s supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei warned Tuesday against American “deceit.”
Mr. Khamenei warned Iranian President Hassan Rouhani, in a letter to “guard against deceit and violations of arrogant states particularly the United States,” Agence France-Presse reported.
His remarks come just days after the U.S. lifted an estimated $32 billion in sanctions under the nuclear deal.
On Monday, Mr. Rouhani wrote to Mr. Khamenei to provide an update after the U.N. atomic watchdog declared Saturday that Iran had met its commitments under the nuclear deal.
In response, Mr. Khamenei said Iran must “watch if the other parties fulfill their commitments,” AFP reported.
His remarks highlight remaining tensions between the U.S. and Iran even after the signing of the nuclear deal.
Washington on Sunday unveiled new missile-linked sanctions against Iran after the Islamic republic tested a precision-guided ballistic missile in October in defiance of a U.N. ban.
