Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s 9-point lead in Iowa last month over Sen. Bernard Sanders of Vermont has been almost completely wiped out, according to a new poll released Thursday.
Mrs. Clinton was at 42 percent among likely Democratic caucus-goers and Mr. Sanders was at 40 percent in the Des Moines Register/Bloomberg Politics poll. Her 2-point edge, down from 9 percentage points last month, is within the survey’s margin of error of plus or minus 4.4 percentage points.
Support for Mr. Sanders increased by 1 point from last month, while support for Mrs. Clinton fell 6 points.
Former Maryland Gov. Martin O’Malley was at 4 percent in the new poll.
Mr. Sanders led among first-time caucus-goers, independents, and people under the age of 45, while Mrs. Clinton had leads among seniors, women, Democrats, moderates, and people earning $100,000 or more.
A Quinnipiac poll released this week showed Mr. Sanders with a 5-point lead over Mrs. Clinton in Iowa, 49 percent to 44 percent. The new surveys come as the candidates prepare for the next Democratic debate Sunday and as the Clinton camp has stepped up attacks on Mr. Sanders on the issues of gun control and health care.
