A key Marco Rubio surrogate “went there” Monday, attacking New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie over his weight struggles.

In an interview with Boston Herald radio, U.S. Rep. Darrell E. Issa of California dismissed Mr. Christie’s attack on Mr. Rubio during Saturday night’s debate over whether the senator from Florida gave repetitive answers.

Mr. Issa was asked why Mr. Rubio didn’t have a variety of answers ready when asked about his experience, and the Californian shot back that he “wasn’t asked that question.”

“He was told in a sort of domineering fashion by a slightly older, slightly overweight governor,” Mr. Issa said before doubling down on the fat joke.
“OK, he wasn’t slightly — he’s a lot overweight.”

The New Jersey governor’s weight has fluctuated dramatically during his half-decade as a national political figure.

Mr. Christie is believed to have weighed as much as 400 pounds, though he has slimmed down considerably since having gastric bypass surgery in 2013.

He is still easily the largest man in either party’s presidential field and the butt of many comedians’ jokes.

“The large bulk of the weight has come off, and I’ve seen that reflected in my tests with my doctors and everything else,” Mr. Christie said in October.
