PORTSMOUTH, N.H. — Former President Bill Clinton on Sunday night launched a vicious attack against Sen. Bernard Sanders, telling voters in nearby Milford that the Vermont senator’s policy proposals exist inside a “hermetically sealed” box that’s fully detached from reality.
At a campaign rally for his wife, Hillary Clinton, Mr. Clinton continued the campaign’s recent tack of intense, sometimes borderline personal attacks against Mr. Sanders.
“When you’re making a revolution you can’t be too careful with the facts,” Mr. Clinton said at the rally, which he headlined because Mrs. Clinton spent Sunday in Flint, Michigan.
He went on to say that Mrs. Clinton has embraced realistic policy solutions on health care, affordable college and other key issues, while Mr. Sanders hasn’t.
“It’s a hermetically sealed box. It’s very effective. The system is rigged against you by the big banks, and both parties are in the thrall of the big banks. Anybody who takes money from Goldman Sachs couldn’t possibly be president,” Mr. Clinton said, repeating Mr. Sanders’ frequent attacks on Mrs. Clinton for her close ties to Wall Street.
The comments came just two days before New Hampshire voters head to the polls. The most recent Real Clear Politics average of all surveys shows Mr. Sanders leading Mrs. Clinton in the Granite State by 15 points.
In his remarks, Mr. Clinton also took direct aim at Sanders supporters known as the “Bernie Bros,” a group that has launched sexist attacks against Mrs. Clinton online.
Mr. Sanders condemned those supporters in an interview on Sunday.
“Look, we don’t want that crap,” he said. “Anybody who is supporting me that is doing the sexist things is, we don’t want them,” he told CNN’s “State of the Union.” “I don’t want them. That is not what this campaign is about.”
