Democratic presidential candidate Sen. Bernard Sanders said Sunday that he doesn’t want support from “Bernie bros,” a group backing the Vermont senator who often attack his rival Hillary Clinton in crude and sexist ways.
In an interview on CNN’s “State of the Union,” Mr. Sanders disavowed the largely online group that has tried to raise him up by bashing Mrs. Clinton for being a woman.
“I have heard about it. It’s disgusting,” Mr. Sanders said. “Look, we don’t want that crap. We will do everything we can, and I think we have tried.”
“Anybody who is supporting me and who is doing sexist things, we don’t want them,” he said. “I don’t want them. That is not what this campaign is about.”
“Bernie bros” are a largely online group of Sanders supports who have attacked Mrs. Clinton and her followers on social media, often criticizing her because of her gender.
Mrs. Clinton’s campaign has criticized Mr. Sanders for not doing more to speak out against his sexist supporters.
She said on CNN’s “State of the Union” Sunday that sexist remarks are a daily occurrence for her.
“We are still living with a double standard,” she said. “I know it. Every woman I know knows it.”
She said that she is doing her best to show her qualifications for the presidency and that she will keep talking about her record, rather than addressing why a woman is fit to hold the nation’s highest office.
