House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi declared Hillary Clinton “a progressive” on Thursday, weighing in on a key issue in the Democratic presidential nomination fight.
Sen. Bernard Sanders, Mrs. Clinton’s competition for the nomination, has said Mrs. Clinton is an inconsistent liberal, and has even bragged about being a “moderate” in the past — factors he said should make Democratic voters wary of nominating her.
But Mrs. Pelosi, while saying there’s no question of Mr. Sanders’ progressive credentials, also said Mrs. Clinton qualifies too.
“I think Hillary Clinton is a progressive,” she told reporters at her weekly press briefing.
Mrs. Pelosi went on to question the underpinnings of the dispute.
“Who sets the standard for progressive? Let me tell you, some days, I’m the darling of the progressives, and the next day — maybe the same day — I’m the target,” she said.
Mrs. Pelosi has not endorsed Mrs. Clinton yet, though she signaled that’s likely eventually.
