Rick Santorum endorsed Marco Rubio for president on Wednesday evening, just hours after it was widely reported that he’d drop out of the race himself.
The former U.S. senator from Pennsylvania, who won the Iowa caucuses in 2012, made his endorsement in an appearance on Fox News Channel’s “On the Record” show where he also formally announced the suspension of his campaign.
Show host Greta Van Susteren tweeted out several statements about Mr. Rubio attributed to Mr. Santorum, whose effort to repeat his 2012 run fizzled and never got above the low single-digits in polling.
Mr. Rubio “is a tremendously gifted young man; he will bring this country together,” said Mr. Santorum, according to Ms. Van Susteren’s Twitter account.
“I don’t endorse lightly,” Mr. Santorum reportedly said, becoming the first of the four Iowa presidential dropouts to formally endorse a former rival.
