OPINION:
I n a recent People magazine article actress Whoopi Goldberg was quoted as saying, “Boycotts — to me — are a pain in the butt.” Obviously Ms. Goldberg does not appreciate how boycotts have positively shaped human history. They are the reason authors with racist mindset s no longer write offensive novels such as ” The Story of Little Black Sambo .”
Nor does Ms. Goldberg seem to appreciate how ’pain-in-the-butt’ boycotts helped pave the road for her success. The sacrifice and struggle of past African-Americans opened doors for her to win an Academy Award for “Ghost” in 1991. Similarly they are the reason why she occupies a co-host seat on “The View.” Hence Ms. Goldberg ought to be more sensitive and supportive of the cause for diversity and fairness.
Sadly her attitude aligns less with the courageous activist and more with the cowardly overseer on Simon Legree’s plantation.
