“The Revenant” star Leonardo DiCaprio said on ABC’s pre-Oscars show that making the frontier revenge drama was “truly one of the most difficult films I’ve done in my entire life.”

The film, which is up for 12 Oscars Sunday including best picture and best actor, was filmed on location in Canada using only natural lighting.

Mr. DiCaprio said “living” the experience of making the film “is what you see up onscreen. I think people honestly want to see that kind of cinema.”

Mr. DiCaprio has already won the SAG and Golden Globe awards for his performance.

“You can feel that it’s pretty much going to be Leo’s year,” Mr. DiCaprio’s “Titanic” co-star, Kate Winslet, said of his chances of winning against her “Steve Jobs” co-star, Michael Fassbender.
