Donald Trump said he will eventually release his tax returns, but said Thursday he’s in the middle of being audited by the government and won’t do it until the review is over.

“Every year they audit me, audit me,” he said at a GOP presidential debate in Houston. “As soon as the audit is done, I love it.”

Fellow candidates Sens. Ted Cruz and Marco Rubio promised they’ll release tax returns in the next couple of days.

Mr. Rubio said he’s not being audited and he doesn’t expect any surprises in his forms, while Mr. Cruz said the fact that Mr. Trump is being audited means voters have even more reason to see his returns

The issue arose after 2012 GOP nominee Mitt Romney said he thought Mr. Trump was hiding something by not releasing his taxes. The attack was odd because Mr. Romney faced similar accusations in 2012, and bristled at them at the time.

Mr. Trump said Mr. Romney “looked like a fool” for delaying until just a month and a half before the election that year. But Mr. Trump also said his taxes won’t show anything stunning, saying voters already have a sense for his finances thanks to his massive financial disclosure form he filed in the summer.

“I built a great company with very little debt,” he said.
