Sen. Ted Cruz’s top campaign spokeswoman said Wednesday they feel “really good” about Mr. Cruz’s prospects in Texas but stopped short of predicting a victory in the Lone Star State on March 1.
“We’re feeling really good about the chances here in Texas,” Alice Stewart, the Cruz campaign’s communications director, said Wednesday on Fox News.
She said the campaign would get a “phenomenal boost” with the official backing of Texas Gov. Greg Abbott Wednesday.
“A lot will happen — we’re expecting a lot of great numbers to come in next Tuesday night, Texas being one,” she said. “We’re very excited also about Arkansas, Georgia, Louisiana — several great states that are on tap, and we’re excited to rally the people. … It’s all about turning out the base, turning out our voters, and the poll numbers are great here in Texas, and we’re having Greg Abbott and former Texas Gov. Rick Perry out there on the campaign trail with us this week.”
After winning the Iowa caucuses, Mr. Cruz has finished in third place in New Hampshire, South Carolina and Nevada, and has pitched himself as the only candidate to have actually defeated GOP front-runner Donald Trump in a state thus far.
Public polling has shown that Mr. Cruz has an edge in Texas, though Mr. Trump appears to be within striking distance.
