Taking aim at businessman Donald Trump, Sen. Ted Cruz said at a campaign rally Wednesday that too much is riding on the 2016 presidential election to get fooled by a showman that is more bluster than substance.
Mr. Cruz said the Texas voters that will decide the fate of 155 delegates up for grabs in its Super Tuesday contest next week are “are not a people who are impressed by a lot of blustery rhetoric that is not backed up by truth.”
“We can’t be fooled by P.T. Barnum,” Mr. Cruz said, alluding to the late founder of the Barnum & Bailey Circus. “The time for the clowns and the acrobats and the dancing bears has past.”
Looking to rebound from third place finishes in the Nevada caucuses and South Carolina primary, Mr. Cruz is banking on a strong showing in Texas, and other Southern states with large evangelical Christian populations that are set to vote in the March 1 Super Tuesday contests.
Mr. Trump, meanwhile, is pushing to build on the momentum he is carrying from three straight victories in New Hampshire, South Carolina and Nevada.
