INDIANAPOLIS — Washington Redskins inside linebacker Keenan Robinson is an impending unrestricted free agent and it appears unlikely he will return for a fifth season with the team.
“I think he’s going to hit free agency and probably land somewhere else,” coach Jay Gruden said on Wednesday at Lucas Oil Stadium.
Robinson started eight games this season before Will Compton supplanted him in the lineup. Compton started in Week 10 and was a central component of the defense the remainder of the season. Though Compton had already earned the starting job, Robinson was also dealing with injuries to his labrum, biceps and rotator cuff — all in his right shoulder.
After missing five games, Robinson returned in a limited role for the final three games of the season.
“I know he had high hopes of playing very well for us,” Gruden said. “Unfortunately, the injury bug hit him. And I think when he hurt his shoulder initially it hindered his performance. Then we kept him out, let him rehab it, let him get better. And when he did come back that’s when Compton was playing very well and we didn’t want to take Compton out. Keenan finished off strong for us, was good in the locker room.”
The Redskins drafted Robinson in the fourth round of the 2012 draft. Robinson has played 36 games with the Redskins and recorded 183 tackles and missed the 2013 season because of a torn pectoral muscle.
Inside linebacker Mason Foster, who signed with the Redskins in September and started the final five games of the season alongside Compton, is also an impending free agent.
