Film director Spike Lee is endorsing Sen. Bernard Sanders for president, saying in a new radio ad that Mr. Sanders has been a consistent and longtime advocate for civil rights.

“Bernie was at the March on Washington with Dr. King. He was arrested in Chicago for protesting segregation in public schools. He fought for wealth and education equality throughout his whole career. No flipping. No flopping,” Mr. Lee says in the 60-second radio spot. “Enough talk. Time for action.”

The spot featuring Mr. Lee, director of films like “Do the Right Thing,” “He Got Game,” and “25th Hour,” was released Tuesday ahead of Saturday’s South Carolina Democratic presidential primary.

“Wake up, South Carolina — this is your dude, Spike Lee, and I know that you know [this] system is rigged,” he says. “For too long we’ve given our votes to corporate puppets. Sold the okie-doke.”

“Ninety-nine percent of Americans were hurt by the Great Recession of 2008, and many are still recovering,” Mr. Lee says. “And that’s why I am officially endorsing my brother Bernie Sanders. Bernie takes no money from corporations. Nada. Which means he is not on the take. And when Bernie gets in the White House, he will do the right thing.”
