The 45-year-old Uber driver arrested over the weekend in connection with a spate of shootings that killed six people in Kalamazoo, Michigan, was charged Monday with 16 criminal counts, including murder and weapons charges.
Court proceedings are set to get underway Monday afternoon in the case, with Jason Brian Dalton scheduled to be arraigned on the charges. But much about the shootings, including the motive, remains unknown.
The randomness of the shootings, coupled with reports that Mr. Dalton was shuttling Uber passengers across the city in between attacks, has puzzled investigators.
The first shooting, which injured a woman, took place around 5:40 p.m. Saturday outside an apartment complex. The next at 10 p.m. killed a father and his 17-year-old son, who were shopping for cars at a car dealership. The final shooting took place a short time later, around 10:24 p.m., outside a Cracker Barrel restaurant. Four women in their 60s and 70s were killed and a 14-year-old girl critically injured.
Mr. Dalton was arrested early Sunday without incident after police spotted his vehicle in downtown Kalamazoo.
He is charged with six counts of homicide, eight felony firearms counts, and two counts of assault with intent to kill. He is expected to appear in court Monday afternoon.
