Sen. Claire McCaskill, Missouri Democrat, announced Monday that she has breast cancer and will be taking leave of Congress for a few weeks.

In an announcement on her Tumblr account, Mrs. McCaskill said she learned of the diagnosis “very recently” through a regular mammogram.

“It’s a little scary, but my prognosis is good and I expect a full recovery,” Mrs. McCaskill wrote.

She said she would be in treatment in St. Louis for three weeks and would do her best to continue her Senate work, though her presence for roll-call votes will be impossible.

“During this time my staff will continue to assist Missourians and I will be posting on my Senate website (McCaskill.senate.gov) how I would have voted on any matters that come before the Senate during my absence — which I’ll also enter into the Congressional record. Additionally, I’ll be submitting questions in writing for any missed Senate hearings,” she concluded.
