The White House confirmed Friday that the U.S. military carried out airstrikes earlier in the day against an Islamic State training camp in Libya, targeting a top militant commander.
“We at this point cannot confirm the results of the operation,” said White House press secretary Josh Earnest.
Noureddine Chouchane, a senior Islamic State leader from Tunisia, was believed to be among those at the site. He is wanted for carrying out a terrorist attack in March 2015 in Tunisia that killed 23 people at a museum and another attack at a seaside resort that killed 38 tourists.
Mr. Earnest said the attack is connected to airstrikes against Islamic State targets in Libya last November and is “an indication that the president will make good on his promise” to keep up pressure on the extremist group.
