Judge Sri Srinivasan of the U.S. District Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia has the best chance of succeeding Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia, according to a top online oddsmaker.
BookMaker.eu released its odds Thursday in favor of Mr. Srinivasan, followed by a three-way tie with Merrick Garland, chief judge of the U.S. District Court of Appeals for D.C.; California Attorney General Kamala Harris; and U.S. Attorney General Loretta Lynch.
“A group of our sharper political gamblers hit Sri Srinivasan pretty hard the first 24 hours we opened the prop. We took limit bets on Srinivasan at +750, which drove the price all the way down to +340. He is now the favorite for the nomination,” said Bookmaker.eu’s Scott Cooley in a statement.
Born in India, Mr. Srinivasan, 48, sits on the nation’s top appeals court and has argued 25 cases before the Supreme Court. He’s seen as a candidate who could appeal to both Democrats and Republicans, based on his 97-0 Senate confirmation vote in May 2013.
Senate Republicans have said they will not consider any candidate prior to the November presidential election to replace Justice Scalia, the long-serving conservative justice who died Saturday at age 79, prompting an outcry from Democrats.
