GOP presidential candidate Donald Trump said Thursday that Pope Francis is a “very political person” who doesn’t understand the danger associated with the United States’ southern border.

“I think that the pope is a very political person,” Mr. Trump said on Fox Business Network. “I think he doesn’t understand the problems our country has. I don’t think he understands the danger of the open border that we have with Mexico.”

Mr. Trump, who has repeatedly pledged to build a wall along the United States’ southern border that he says Mexico will pay for, had been asked what he thinks about Pope Francis’ apparent plans to stand with migrants at the border during the pope’s coming trip to Mexico.

“I think Mexico got him to do it because Mexico wants to keep the border just the way it is, because they’re making a fortune and we’re losing,” Mr. Trump said.
