D.C. police say an officer fatally shot a man in Northeast early Monday.

The officer had tried to stop the man about 2 a.m. near 53rd Street and Clay Terrace NE, police said. The man ran away, and the officer pursued him. During a struggle with the officer, the man brandished a firearm, and the officer drew his service weapon and fired, striking the man.

The man, who has not been identified pending notification of next of kin, was taken to a hospital, where he died.

At the scene of the shooting, the officer recovered the man’s firearm, which was determined to be a BB gun.

Detectives are investigating the shooting. Police did not say why the officer had tried to stop the man.
