New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie said Monday it’s pretty safe to say he will not win the Iowa caucuses, but that he’s looking to be the No. 1 governor in the 2016 GOP presidential race coming out of the first few states.

“I think it’s pretty safe to say I won’t,” Mr. Christie said on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe.”

“I have spent a lot of time here, and I think we can do better than people expect here tonight,” he said. “So, you know, that’s what we’re going to do. We’ll head back this afternoon to New Hampshire. We’ll do two events in New Hampshire tonight, and we’ll get on the road to doing very well in New Hampshire, too.”

“We have always thought that what we want to be is the number one governor coming out of these two races,” he said. “That if we beat Jeb Bush, John Kasich, Mike Huckabee, that we’re the number one governor left, then that moves us on to the future races.”

“So that’s always been our goal,” Mr. Christie said. “It’s less a number in the race, it’s who we beat, who’s behind us that matters the most to us [because] that’ll help us to consolidate support and money and all the rest.”
