AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) - GOP Gov. Paul LePage has officially proclaimed the November election results while a ballot question to legalize marijuana undergoes a recount.
Legislation approved by voters to raise the minimum wage, establish ranked-choice voting and authorize an infrastructure bond will become law on Jan. 7.
Maine voters also approved an income surtax on the state’s highest earners to fund schools. But the official proclamation of the new law is delayed because a recount was initially requested and later withdrawn.
Official results for ballot questions approving marijuana will be proclaimed after the Secretary of State’s office certifies the recount results.
LePage is urging legislators to delay implementation of the minimum wage hike and income surtax, both of which he says will have a disproportionate impact on the economy and the state’s elderly.
