HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) - The Board of Regents for Higher Education is extending an employment contract for Mark Ojakian (oh-JAY’-kee-an) an additional three years as president of the Connecticut State College and University System.

The board also voted Thursday to remove the term “interim” from his title.

Ojakian, Democratic Gov. Dannel P. Malloy’s former chief of staff, was named interim president in September 2015. His contract was set to expire in August 2017, but will now expire in August 2020.

The CSCU system includes 12 community colleges, four state universities and the online Charter Oak State College.

Board Chairman Matt Fleury credits Ojakian with bringing stability to the recently merged system and improving relations between faculty and staff at various schools. The previous president’s tenure was marked by a no-confidence vote from some faculty.
