MORRIS TOWNSHIP, N.J. (AP) - A local Republican New Jersey political leader who served as an adviser to Donald Trump’s presidential campaign says he plans to run to replace Gov. Chris Christie.
Nutley Commissioner Steve Rogers announced the start of his campaign at a hotel in Morris Township on Thursday.
Some of his supporters wore red “Steve Rogers for Governor” hats that were similar to Trump’s “Make America Great Again” hats.
Assemblyman Jack Ciattarelli is also running for the Republican nomination and Lt. Gov. Kim Guadagno is considering joining the race.
Rogers says he will cut taxes and relax regulations and work to improve transportation and infrastructure.
He is a retired Nutley police detective who served in the Air Force. He also appears as a commentator on Fox News.
