TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) - The administrator who oversees the University of Arizona medical schools in Tucson and Phoenix has resigned.

Dr. Joe “Skip” Garcia announced Thursday he wants to devote his full attention as a professor at the UA College of Medicine-Tucson.

He told UA President Ann Weaver Hart that he’ll resign his administrative duties as senior vice president for health sciences and return to the faculty full time next month.

Garcia has held the position for three years, but has come under scrutiny for his agency’s spending of public funds and the accuracy of its public documents.

Hart says Garcia has had a profound impact on the future of the medical schools and the Colleges of Pharmacy, Nursing and Public Health at the UA.

An interim senior vice president will be named soon.
