First lady Michelle Obama says she was fast asleep when the rest of the world learned Donald Trump won the U.S. presidential election.

In a joint interview with President Obama for People magazine, the first lady said she’s never been a fan of political banter so she opted for some much-needed Zs instead of waiting for the election results.

“I went to bed. I don’t like to watch the political discourse; I never have,” Mrs. Obama said, adding of her husband, “I barely did with him.”

The first lady served as a powerful campaign surrogate for Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton and gave speeches on the trail criticizing Mr. Trump’s “bullying” and alleged treatment of women. She said she still stands by those statements today.

“Anything that I felt about the election I said and I stand by,” Mrs. Obama told People. “Once you do what you can do, then the rest is easy. It was in the hands of the American people.”

She said she and her husband are ready to help the president-elect in his transition to the White House.

“This is our democracy, and this is how it works,” Mrs. Obama said. “We are ready to work with the next administration and make sure they are as successful as they can be. Because that’s what’s best for this country.”
