LOS ANGELES (AP) - The Los Angeles area is ringing in the New Year with free public transportation to urge revelers not to drink and drive.

City News Service reports LA Metro is offering free rides and beefing up service for New Year’s Eve.

Free service will begin at 9 p.m. Saturday for trains, and will last until 2 a.m. After 2 a.m., customers will need a TAP card as usual to ride.

Metro rail lines and the Orange and Silver bus lines will offer 24-hour service overnight.

Riders attending the New Year’s Eve celebration in downtown Los Angeles will receive a free glow stick at any Grand Park info booth.

Metro will also operate on a Sunday/holiday schedule on New Year’s Day with extra service for the Rams/Arizona Cardinals game at the coliseum.
