ATLANTA (AP) - An Atlanta landmark that’s slated for demolition may come down by next March.
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports (https://bit.ly/2gXF3Tt) that the Georgia Building Authority says it will be March before it implodes the old state archives building near the state Capitol. The building, nicknamed “White Ice Cube,” was built in 1965. Its upper floors, which have no windows, are visible to interstate highway travelers passing through the city.
Engineers say it is sinking due to groundwater and nearby interstate construction. A new archives facility was built near Clayton State University.
State officials had originally hoped the old archives building could be imploded in August. However, that was delayed because of asbestos remediation and other issues.
A new court building that will replace it will likely cost more than $100 million.
