AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) - Several new Maine laws will become effective on Sunday, including one that limits the opioid dosage doctors can prescribe.

The Portland Press Herald reports (https://bit.ly/2hwhkNe ) that beginning on Sunday, the maximum dose for many patients will be set at 100 morphine milligram equivalents a day.

Doctors must also use the state’s prescription monitoring program to track the number and type of prescriptions each patient receives.

Opioid prescriptions for chronic pain will be lowered from 90 days to 30, and prescriptions for short-term pain treatment will be lowered from 10 days to seven.

Other new laws taking effect include a 50 percent price hike for season passes to Maine’s park system and the use of new standards for achieving a high school diploma.
