SOUTH KINGSTOWN, R.I. (AP) - A judge has ruled that a substance abuse treatment program can buy a Narragansett property and rent it to individuals who complete its recovery programs.

The Providence Journal reported (https://bit.ly/2htn0E8 ) Thursday that a Superior Court judge reversed the town zoning board’s decision and ruled that Galilee Mission Inc. can buy the property and use it as a rental.

Galilee Mission provides residential treatment for up to a dozen men at its Mission House.

The program sought to buy a two-family home to provide its graduates with affordable housing and the ability to earn income.

Concerned residents approached building officials, who said last year the program couldn’t operate there. The zoning board upheld that decision.

The judge ruled that Galilee Mission can own property and rent it to whomever it chooses.
