CANNELTON, Ind. (AP) - A southern Indiana fire chief faces a battery charge for allegedly shoving an officer who was checking a burning house for occupants.

The Courier-Journal of Louisville, Kentucky, reports (https://cjky.it/2hwT6T6 ) Cannelton Fire Department chief Christopher Herzog was arrested Tuesday by two state troopers in the city about 50 miles east of Evansville.

State Police say a Cannelton police officer and a sheriff’s deputy arrived at the burning house first and began checking for occupants.

Police say Herzog then arrived, pushed the officer twice, shouted obscenities and told him to “get off of his fire.”

He was booked into the Perry County Jail on a battery against a public safety official charge and released on bond.

The 51-year-old Herzog doesn’t have a telephone listing and it’s unclear if he has an attorney.
