PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - Rhode Island transportation officials have proposed reducing congestion on the deteriorating Interstate 95 North viaduct in Providence by building two new viaducts.

The Providence Journal reports (https://bit.ly/2iIotI2 ) that one viaduct would carry through traffic toward Boston. Vehicles getting on and off in Providence would use a second “collector distributor road.”

The plan effectively divides the highway into local and express lanes. It eliminates so-called “weaving conflicts” caused by cars bearing right trying to exit while others bear left to travel north.

The state Department of Transportation has applied for $59 million in federal grant money for the northbound viaduct to supplement $167 million in state money.

The state plans to seek bids next year if it gets the necessary funding. Construction would be scheduled for completion in 2024.
