SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - Low gas prices this year have prevented Utah residents from having to pay a higher gas tax in 2017.

The Salt Lake Tribune reports (https://bit.ly/2hqnPxL ) that last year, lawmakers approved a nearly 5-cent per gallon tax hike that went into effect at the start of 2016. The legislation also created a system that could automatically raise that tax every year to keep up with inflation, but only if gasoline prices increase.

The Utah Tax Commission says it has determined gasoline and diesel tax rates will not change next year.

The commission has estimated the current tax, 29.4 cents per gallon, generates about $76 million a year. Seventy percent of that revenue goes toward state highways and the remainder takes care of local roads.
