PASSAIC, N.J. (AP) - Federal officials say a New Jersey mattress company must pay nearly $293,000 to 55 workers who were improperly denied overtime.

Passaic-based Citi Mattress has entered into a consent judgment with the U.S. Department of Labor to pay the workers who sew and load mattresses.

A department investigation found the company had violated the Fair Labor Standards Act by failing to give the workers overtime pay when they logged more than 40 hours a week.

Besides paying $292,998 in back wages and damages, the company must now use an automated timekeeping system and give each hourly worker a statement containing the hours worked each week.

The company declined comment on the judgment.
