NEW ROADS, La. (AP) - Louisiana child protection officials say a hearing is expected soon to determine whether a newborn baby found in a trash can in a Walmart restroom will stay in state custody.

Linda Carter of the Louisiana Department of Children and Family Services says that hearing is expected soon, as state law dictates it be held within a few days.

The Advocate reports (https://bit.ly/2hvfJc9 ) that the baby is being called Olivia after firefighters and hospital workers came up with the name.

New Roads Police Chief Kevin McDonald says the baby, found Friday at the New Roads Walmart, is doing well.

McDonald said 34-year-old Kyandrea Thomas is believed to have given birth to the child. She’s charged with attempted second-degree murder. It wasn’t known whether she has an attorney who could be reached for comment.
