MADISON, Wis. (AP) - Assembly Minority Leader Peter Barca is promising Democrats will be more focused this session.

Assembly Republicans enter the session with a 64-35 edge, their largest since 1957. Barca said Wednesday that President-elect Donald Trump’s momentum and district boundaries that favor Republicans contributed to GOP gains in November.

He hopes a court ruling striking down the boundaries will stand and help Democrats gain ground in 2018. He says he doesn’t plan to run for governor but expects to start recruiting Assembly candidates next week, months earlier than usual.

Meanwhile, he says, Democrats will hold more rural hearings to connect with voters and will focus on big issues such as helping the middle class with a higher minimum wage and paid sick leave rather than talking about “10 things in a week.”
