NEWPORT, R.I. (AP) - Newport leaders are hoping to make their city the home for a new University of Rhode Island-affiliated innovation campus focused on oceanography, climate change and cybersecurity.

The Newport Daily News reports (https://bit.ly/2iAlgyc ) that the city plans to compete for $20 million in funding approved by voters in a statewide bond question last month.

Rhode Island voters approved Question 4, which asked for $45.5 million in higher education construction projects centered at URI. Of that, $20 million is to build a campus at an undetermined location where private companies and academics collaborate on research.

State Senate President Teresa Paiva Weed, a Newport Democrat, says the city is a good candidate for the campus but applications are also likely to come from Providence and elsewhere.
