L’ANSE, Mich. (AP) - Most of the 1,200 Semco Energy customers in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula have had their natural gas service restored following the rupture of a gas line that also caused a fire and explosion.
The utility says service remained out Saturday night to about 86 customers in Baraga County’s L’Anse area, northwest of Marquette.
To restore gas service, valves at each address have to be shut off by utility workers. Workers then have to return to open the valves.
A motorist drove his car off U.S. 41 early Friday morning, struck the gas line and caused a fire at a utility station in the L’Anse area near Lake Superior. There were no injuries.
Authorities have said the driver may have fallen asleep at the wheel. The man was ticketed for careless driving.
