MILWAUKEE (AP) - A look back at news headlines in Wisconsin in 2016 shows politics dominating the landscape with key Republican leaders from the Badger State influencing their party’s path to a surprising Donald Trump presidency.
The state, for the first time in 32 years, voted to send a Republican presidential candidate to the White House. Trump’s road to the nomination touched off a political dance among Wisconsin’s top Republicans.
U.S. House Speaker Paul Ryan and Gov. Scott Walker initially held back their endorsement of Trump, but eventually decided to support him. Trump tapped another political heavyweight from Wisconsin, Republican National Committee chairman Reince Priebus, as his White House chief of staff.
