ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) - The National Weather Service is forecasting heavy snow and strong winds in Alaska’s Turnagain Pass and Portage Valley over the holiday weekend.
The Weather Service earlier Friday issued a blizzard watch for the area, replacing it later with a winter weather advisory.
Forecasters say the advisory is in effect between Saturday afternoon and mid Sunday morning. They say expected conditions could make driving difficult.
As much as a foot of snow could fall in the area and visibility could be greatly reduced. Forecasters say winds of up to 50 mph also are possible.
The Weather Service says snow is expected to intensify late Saturday afternoon, improving Sunday morning. It says whiteout conditions in blowing snow are possible.
