AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) - State lawmakers from Cape Elizabeth and Falmouth are trying to lower the speed limit on a busy section of Interstate 295.

The Portland Press Herald reports Sen. Rebecca Millett and Rep. Teresa Pierce, both Democrats, have submitted bills to lower the speed limit from 70 mph to 60 mph between Falmouth and Brunswick.

The newspaper says crashes have increased more than 30 percent on I-295 between Falmouth and Gardiner since 2013. The speed limit rose from 65 mph to 70 mph in 2014.

State police say daily traffic volume has increased and that enforcing the speed limit has become hazardous.

A transportation department spokesman says the state commissioner of transportation can change speed limits with input from state police.

The department declined to comment on the proposal.
