BOSTON (AP) - A federal judge has dismissed a lawsuit that alleged Boston was improperly holding services such as Uber or Lyft to different standards than taxi cab owners.
The Boston Globe reports (https://bit.ly/2i05UCr ) U.S. District Court Judge Nathaniel Gorton ruled Wednesday that the lawsuit was made irrelevant by a new state law that prohibits local governments from creating their own rules for those services.
The cab companies had argued in their lawsuit that Boston was violating their equal protection rights by holding them to stricter standards.
The taxi owners say they will now focus on a separate lawsuit that challenges the state law.
That law requires background check for those who drive for ride-hailing companies, but doesn’t require them to be fingerprinted, something that is required for taxi drivers in Boston.
