PETERSBURG, Va. (AP) - Gov. Terry McAuliffe is asking retired schoolteachers across Virginia to consider returning to the classroom in Petersburg.

The Richmond Times-Dispatch reports (https://bit.ly/2hVsgov) about 500 retired teachers received a later last week from McAuliffe, saying Petersburg City Schools is facing high turnover and teacher shortages.

He says the district currently has 22 vacancies. McAuliffe says the veteran teachers have the experience and expertise Petersburg schools need.

The letter wasn’t addressed specifically to former Petersburg teachers. It was sent to teachers who worked in districts across the state but now live in areas near the city, including Chesterfield County.

McAuliffe also mentioned a state law that allows retired teachers who return to help out in areas where there’s a critical shortage to receive a new salary and continue collecting their pension.
