President-elect Donald Trump on Wednesday said he would have campaigned differently and done even better — if, he said, that’s even possible — had the election been based entirely on the popular vote.
“I would have done even better in the election, if that is possible, if the winner was based on popular vote — but would campaign differently,” Mr. Trump tweeted.
“Campaigning to win the Electoral College is much more difficult & sophisticated than the popular vote. Hillary focused on the wrong states!” he also tweeted, referring to Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton.
“I have not heard any of the pundits or commentators discussing the fact that I spent FAR LESS MONEY on the win than Hillary on the loss!” he tweeted.
Electors met on Monday to formally ratify Mr. Trump’s win last month. Mrs. Clinton ended up winning the popular vote over Mr. Trump by close to 3 million votes, or about 2 percent.
Mr. Trump has said multiple times since Election Day that his historic upset win could have, and would have, been bigger under a different system.
“If the election were based on total popular vote I would have campaigned in N.Y. Florida and California and won even bigger and more easily,” he tweeted on Nov. 15.
“The Electoral College is actually genius in that it brings all states, including the smaller ones, into play. Campaigning is much different!” he also tweeted then.
