DENVER (AP) - Denver is joining other cities around the country in requiring that standalone public bathrooms be open to anyone who wants to use them.

City councilors unanimously approved a change to the city’s building code on Monday requiring that all new and existing bathrooms be labeled with signs designating them as gender neutral. Bathrooms that have more than one stall will remain labeled as being for men or for women only.

Members of Denver’s LGBTQ Commission advocated for the change but some small businesses also supported it, seeing it as a way to avoid lines at one bathroom while another stood empty.

Cities including New York and Seattle as well as California have passed laws requiring gender-neutral single restrooms.

Denver businesses have until May 2018 to change the signs.
