SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - When Salt Lake City officials decided on four spots to place new homeless shelters, they rejected seven other sites that included a spot near City Hall and a Mormon church on the city’s eastern foothills.

The Salt Lake Tribune (https://bit.ly/2hE3vg9) obtained a list of the sites Salt Lake City officials rejected in their search to replace an overflowing downtown homeless shelter.

Officials earlier this month announced the location of four 150-bed shelters, some of which drew vocal opposition from residents and businesses.

Officials say they picked sites that were close to public transportation and other services.

The list shows the site near City Hall would have included a costly demolition of an old bank, while the site on the city’s far east side was far from other homeless services and would have required rezoning the Mormon church meetinghouse.

A previous version of this story incorrectly said city officials have proposed 11 sites for shelters. The city had considered 11 sites but rejected seven, settling on four finalists.
